Early childhood education, basic education and other schooling
Compulsary school and upper secondary schooling are free of cost (starting 1.8.2021).
Early childhood education
Early childhood education is meant for 0-6 year old children. A child can attend early childhood education in a daycare center, family day care or in open activity.

Preschool education and primary school
In preschool, a child practices skills, that are needed in school and in life.

Morning and afternoon care are meant for children in first and second grades or for children with special needs, who need safe activity before and after school.

Basic education is divided into two groups; elementary school grades 1-6 and secondary school grades 7-9.
- A child must be enrolled to primary school the year, the child turns seven (7) years. Enrollment to primary school happens in the beginning of the year.
- Preparatory instruction for comprehensive school is given to children, whose Finnish language skills are not on a sufficient level. The teaching is for about 1 year and after this the child continues basic education with the other children.

- Finnish as a second language- is offered to children and adolescents whose native language is not Finnish, Swedish or Lapp. The teaching and it’s need is spoken about with the child’s parents.
Adults’ basic education
- is meant for 17-25 year olds, who have not had a chance to acconmplish primary school in Finland and need the primary school report card for further studies OR
- for a person, who’s basic schooling is weak or have troubles in their reading or writing skills and need the primary school report card for further studies.
Vocational education
Studies include learning skills that are needed in working life. Vocational studies are divided into three groups; basic vocational qualification, vocational qualification and special vocational qualification.

Integration training for immigrants
Integration traing is meant for adults, who have recently moved to Finland. In integration training, the immigrant studies Finnish language and the Finnish society and working life. An individual vocational plan is made during studies.

Independent studies do to the Act on the Promotion of Immigrant Integration
Independent studies are studies that are supported by unemployment benefit and compensation of expenses for a time period maximum of three (3) years. An expert at the Te-office or Local government pilots on employment will guide to the studies and an agreement will be made before the starting of the studies. Independent studies can be full or part time.

Studying on student financial aid
A student studying full time in universities of applied sciences, vocational schools or upper secondary schools can apply for student financial aid from the Social Insurance Institution of Finland (KELA). Student financial aid is available in the form of study grant and government guarantee for a student loan and in some cases housing supplement. It is also possible to get school transport subsidy if the distance between home and school is long. For additional information about the transport subsidy contact the Social Insurance Institution of Finland (KELA).

Starting from 1.8.2021 upper secondary schooling will be free of cost for everyone, who is done with primary school. The reform concerns all adolescents (youth) who have been born in 2005 and after.
